THE WAY EVADES (AND DROWNS IN WAVES)

This painting with sculptural elements was borne from my own conflicting feelings about how to put Daoist principles into practice in our modern world. I was taken with the image of water flowing around a solid object, slowly reshaping it over time, which informed the decision to pierce the canvas with bamboo (a natural substance subject to degradation). The painted “rushing water” takes two forms on both the front and back of the canvas: on the back, a smooth blue undulation (the conceptual Way), and on the front, a saturated swirl (the chaotic experience of the universe).
